Fenchurch Group begins rebuilding 26 MW Akute power plant in Lagos

Fenchurch Group has begun rebuilding the 26 MW Akute Independent Power Plant in Lagos to provide dedicated electricity to the state’s water infrastructure. The project involves decommissioning existing engines and replacing them with new MWM gas engines.

Work commenced on September 26, 2026. The project will be executed in two phases: 10 MW is expected to be completed within four months, followed by the remaining 16 MW within 12 months. Financed by Zenith Bank, the plant is intended to power the Akute Intake, Iju Waterworks, and Adiyan Waterworks, which together are expected to have a combined capacity of approximately 185 million gallons per day once the Adiyan Phase II project is finished.

Lagos State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, noted that the 26 MW capacity was determined by the peak electricity demand of the water infrastructure. Any excess power generated will be exported to the Ikeja Electric network. Olufemi Bakare, Group CEO of Fenchurch Group, stated the project aims to ensure reliable, around-the-clock power for the state’s expanding water systems through an effective public-private partnership.
