Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games face logistical criticism and athlete welfare concerns

Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games logistical issues athlete accommodation sports management defamation

The 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games are facing significant criticism regarding logistical management and athlete welfare. Yu Seung-min, President of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, issued a failing grade for the event's operations, citing issues that disrupt athlete routines, including inadequate shuttle bus services, poor training environments, and substandard accommodations.

Specific complaints have emerged regarding athlete living conditions, such as cramped container housing and delays in laundry services, which have forced some baseball players to wash uniforms manually. The Organising Committee has responded to several allegations, denying responsibility for poor food quality at teqball venues and attributing cruise ship boarding delays to incomplete documentation from certain delegations.

Beyond logistics, the games have seen intense competition and individual achievements, including North Korean weightlifter Ri Seong-gum winning gold with a world record. However, the event has also been marred by social issues, with the Japan Olympic Committee requesting the removal of over 120 defamatory posts targeting athletes. Additionally, reports have surfaced regarding two North Korean delegation members seeking asylum in Japan.
