Brazil Ministry of Education requests cybercrime probe into university threats

The Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC) is requesting the Federal Police's Cybercrime Division to investigate a series of threats directed at federal universities via social media and messaging applications. Education Minister Leonardo Barchini expressed concern regarding the potential escalation of violence against academic communities.

These investigations follow recent incidents at major institutions. The Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) is currently under investigation by the Federal Police following a massive fire that caused an estimated R$ 100 million in damages. Additionally, the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) reported receiving specific threats of arson and physical aggression against students and staff, particularly following political demonstrations.

In response to the threats at UFF, the university has requested increased security from local authorities and intensified internal monitoring. The MEC and the Federal Police are working to address these digital threats to ensure the safety of students, professors, and public property.
