Portuguese authorities have announced significant progress in resolving school placement shortages for students in the Lisbon metropolitan area. Following emergency meetings between the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation and school directors, officials confirmed that all students in Lisbon without assigned school spots have been placed, primarily by distributing them into existing classes.

In addition to Lisbon, 569 students in Almada, Sintra, and Amadora have been placed. The Ministry noted that 65% of these recent requests were submitted after the official deadline. In Sintra, approximately 295 students who were previously without placements have now been assigned to local schools. The government maintains that no student in compulsory education will be left without a placement.

Simultaneously, the national education system faces critical challenges regarding staffing. A study by the National Teachers' Federation (Fenprof) reveals that two-thirds of surveyed schools were affected by teacher shortages in the previous academic year, with one-third of school administrations predicting continued difficulties. Estimates suggest that over 110,000 students may currently lack a full complement of teachers, particularly in core subjects like Portuguese and Mathematics and in Special Education.
