Fentanyl overdose investigations lead to plea deal and murder charge

Two separate legal developments have emerged regarding fentanyl-related overdose deaths in the United States.

In Dublin, Ozymandias Watson and Jianna Coppedge have reached plea agreements following a federal investigation into a 2022 overdose death. The pair, who were 18 and 19 at the time of the incident, were charged with providing fentanyl-laced pills to a victim. Prosecutors noted that surveillance footage showed Coppedge placing pills in the victim’s hand at a park. Both defendants were sentenced to time-served and will undergo periods of supervised release.

In Tampa, Haley Williams has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder resulting from the unlawful distribution of a controlled substance. The charge follows an investigation into the death of 22-year-old Olivia Williams, whose toxicology report showed fentanyl concentrations approximately 14 times higher than a lethal dose. Law enforcement determined that pills sold as oxycodone were actually pressed fentanyl. During a narcotics operation, detectives seized approximately 60 grams of fentanyl pills and a firearm from Williams’ residence.
