Feraj Arshin preserves traditional Arabic calligraphy in Damascus

In Damascus, Syrian calligrapher Feraj Arshin emphasizes the enduring importance of traditional hand-written Arabic calligraphy in an era of increasing technological advancement. Working from a basement in the historic Rukneddin neighborhood, Arshin has practiced the art professionally for 41 years.

Arshin argues that while computers can produce works, they lack the ‘soul’ found in hand-written letters. Beyond creating art, he focuses on preserving the craft by teaching younger generations. His career includes international recognition, having represented Syria in activities organized by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and winning awards in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
