Ferat Koçak faces scrutiny over ties to Berlin's Remmo clan

German politician Ferat Koçak, a member of the Die Linke party, is facing intense scrutiny regarding his connections to the Remmo clan, a prominent organized crime family in Berlin. Investigations by the Berlin public prosecutor's office indicate that relatives of Koçak, including his aunt and several cousins, were tenants and business operators in a building in Berlin-Neukölln attributed to the Remmo family. This property had previously been seized by authorities in 2018.

The controversy escalated following the release of friendly chat messages between Koçak and Firas Remmo, the son of clan leader Issa Remmo. While Koçak has claimed he only realized late in the process that he was dealing with representatives of organized crime, critics argue his continued contact with the family suggests either weakness or dishonesty.

In response to the pressure, Koçak has agreed to step down from his position on the parliamentary Internal Affairs Committee. However, political debate continues regarding the transparency of his explanations and his associations with activists accused of glorifying terrorism. The leadership of Die Linke has expressed satisfaction with his decision to step down, though some observers criticize the party for not taking more decisive action.
