Ferat Koçak resigns from Bundestag committee amid clan contact controversy

Ferat Koçak, a member of the Left party (Die Linke) in the Bundestag, has resigned from his seat on the Internal Affairs Committee following intense scrutiny over his contacts with the Remmo family, a group associated with organized crime in Berlin. Koçak stated on X that he is stepping down to prevent the controversy from burdening the parliamentary work of his colleagues.

Koçak admitted to being “naive and overwhelmed” in his interactions with Firas Remmo, the son of clan leader Issa Remmo. The controversy stems from leaked chat messages and social media photos from a political election party. In the messages, Koçak reportedly used terms like “brother” and asked for assistance in distributing a video of a parliamentary speech. He has explicitly denied providing any advantages to individuals connected to organized crime.

Bodo Ramelow, Vice President of the Bundestag, has urged the Left party to seek clarity regarding these incidents and other controversial attendees at recent events, including the presence of Ibrahim Ibrahim, an activist linked to the PFLP. Ramelow expressed a need for greater party solidarity, noting that he has faced personal criticism within the party for his views.
