FERC advances PJM grid reforms for greater transparency and independence

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission convened a technical conference to address reforms of PJM Interconnection, the United States' largest power grid that serves about 67 million people across the Mid‑Atlantic and Midwest. PJM has faced rising electricity prices, capacity shortfalls and heightened blackout risk as data‑center demand has surged while new generation additions remain limited.

Participants from the White House, state governments and the power industry discussed measures to make the grid operator’s board more independent and transparent. Proposals include public disclosure of board decisions, extending board‑member terms, granting states greater filing rights and more decision‑making power, and establishing a state committee to align PJM with state policies. Deputy Secretary of Energy James Danly said, “We want the board to not be shrouded in mystery or secrecy.” White House senior director Peter Lake added, “PJM needs an independent, transparent board that can take action and make tough decisions without fear of being fired after every board meeting.”
