Mary Jane Veloso granted absolute pardon by President Marcos Jr
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has granted an absolute pardon to Mary Jane Veloso, a former overseas Filipino worker who spent nearly 16 years in prison. Veloso was arrested in Indonesia in 2010 after authorities discovered 2.6 kg of heroin in her luggage at Yogyakarta's Adisutjipto Airport. She was subsequently convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to death.
Veloso consistently maintained her innocence, claiming she was a victim of human trafficking and was unaware of the drugs hidden in her suitcase. Her execution was delayed in 2015 following diplomatic efforts by the Philippine government. In December 2024, following a prisoner transfer agreement between the Philippines and Indonesia, Veloso was repatriated to the Philippines to serve the remainder of her sentence at the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City.
The Indonesian government has expressed respect for the decision, noting that under the reciprocal prisoner transfer arrangement, responsibility for Veloso's rehabilitation and legal status rests with the Philippine government following her repatriation.
