Ferenc Gyurcsány launches new book and critiques Hungarian politics
Former Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány held a book launch for his new work, ‘Az isteni ember’ (The Divine Man), at the Erzsébetváros Jewish History Society. During the event, Gyurcsány reflected on his political career and the evolving nature of global and domestic politics.
Gyurcsány addressed his controversial 2006 ‘Őszöd speech,’ noting that while he once promised to write about the modern left, he now believes the primary challenge for Western civilization has shifted from left-right dynamics to the preservation of a humanist, democratic center. He criticized the current state of Hungarian politics, claiming that theft and short-term interests have become central to the field.
He also directed criticism toward Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony, labeling him a ‘funny child’ due to the Mayor’s shifting stance regarding the hosting of the Budapest Olympics. Gyurcsány concluded by distinguishing the roles of writers and politicians, noting that while writers can embrace nuance, politicians often operate in a black-and-white environment driven by immediate conflict.
