Ferguson Marine to cut nearly 25% of workforce amid order gap

Ferguson Marine, the state-owned shipyard in Port Glasgow, has announced plans to reduce its workforce by nearly a quarter. The company has invited employees to apply for voluntary redundancy, expecting to cut approximately 70 of its 283 staff members.

The job cuts come as the shipyard faces an “inevitable gap in workload” following the nearing completion of the MV Glen Rosa. While the first of two long-delayed CalMac ferries, the MV Glen Sannox, began service in January 2025, the shipyard currently lacks confirmed future orders.

The Scottish Government previously indicated it would directly award the yard contracts for four new vessels, including two smaller ferries and two fishery support vessels. However, officials stated that “due diligence” and engagement with the Competition and Markets Authority are still required before formal contract awards can be made.

CEO Graeme Thomson stated that while the immediate priority is the handover of the Glen Rosa, proactive staffing changes are necessary to ensure the long-term viability of the yard and to remain ready for future contract negotiations.
