Fermachem fertilizer plant project faces local opposition in Lerdo

Fermachem is preparing to begin construction of a nitrogen fertilizer plant in Lerdo, Durango, following its designation as a strategic project by the Mexican government. The company has completed its detailed engineering phase, an effort involving approximately $25 million in investment and developed by the Spanish firm Técnicas Reunidas. Construction is currently projected to begin between late October and November.

Despite federal support, the project faces significant local resistance. Activists and residents of the Comarca Lagunera have submitted over 180,000 signatures to the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), demanding the rejection of environmental permits due to potential impacts on the Nazas River and the Cañón de Fernández.

Lerdo Mayor Susy Torrecillas stated she will support the project but emphasized strict municipal conditions. To ensure sustainable development and responsible water use, the municipality will require the plant to use exclusively treated water purchased from the city for all processes. Additionally, the company must operate its own wastewater treatment plant, and the municipality will not grant an operating license if the company intends to sell ammonia.
