Fermi Explorer mission aims to reach Alpha Centauri

A group of entrepreneurs, led by Starcloud co-founders Philip Johnston, Adi Oltean, and Ezra Feilden, has established a non-profit organization to launch the Fermi Explorer mission. The project aims to send a small spacecraft to the Alpha Centauri star system to address the Fermi Paradox and test the feasibility of interstellar travel.

The mission seeks to raise approximately $15 million to build and launch a 1-kilogram spacecraft. Due to the use of existing technology and commercial rocket piggybacking rather than advanced propulsion, the journey is estimated to take roughly 80,000 years. The craft is expected to utilize the Oberth maneuver, circling the sun to gain the necessary velocity to escape the solar system, potentially departing by the early 2040s.

Advisors for the project include former Blue Origin President Rob Meyerson and former SpaceX executive Jeff Thornburg. The mission is designed to tackle the concept of the ‘Fermi Great Filter’ by demonstrating that interstellar probes can be launched without being resource-prohibitive.
