Basque Government details Housing Fund for 10,000 rental homes
The Basque Government has released specific details regarding its Housing Fund, which aims to create 10,000 affordable rental homes over the next eight years. This target breaks down to 5,000 homes per legislative term, though the current administration has ordered only 7,000 homes for this period, representing a 30% decrease from previous projections.
Of the 10,000 planned homes, the first 2,000 are already underway using existing government resources. Many of these projects have faced significant delays; for instance, 653 units in Vitoria-Gasteiz have had approved repurposing projects since 2016 but remain unbuilt.
The fund's social scope has also been clarified. The rental homes will not target those on the Etxebider priority list, but rather individuals with annual incomes between 25,000 and 65,000 euros. This has raised questions regarding the progressive nature of the policy, as the income threshold for protected rental housing was recently increased from 46,500 euros.
