Fernanda Maciel sets new fastest known time at Salar de Uyuni

Brazilian ultrarunner Fernanda Maciel has set a new fastest known time (FKT) across Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat. Completing the 172.8-kilometre route from Llica to Uyuni, Maciel finished in 19 hours, 50 minutes, and 8 seconds.

This achievement surpasses the previous record of 33:04:10, set by fellow Brazilian Valmor Giuseppe Leonardo in 2023, by more than 13 hours. The trek took place at an average altitude of approximately 3,700 metres above sea level, where oxygen levels are significantly lower than at sea level.

Maciel faced challenging environmental conditions, including a hailstorm that left sections of the salt flat covered in shallow water, mud, and hidden water-filled holes. Despite these obstacles and digestive difficulties during the run, she completed the course, which included approximately 311 metres of positive elevation gain.
