Fernando Alonso criticizes driver quality after US Grand Prix contact

Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso criticized the quality of drivers at the back of the grid following a collision with Alexander Albon during the United States Grand Prix. Alonso, driving for Aston Martin, finished 16th after starting 12th, attributing his loss of points to damage sustained during the first lap.

The incident occurred at turn 11 on the opening lap when Albon, driving for Williams, made contact with the side of Alonso’s car. Alonso reported that the contact damaged his floor and front wing, forcing extra pit stops and hindering his competitiveness. The collision also triggered a virtual safety car to clear debris from the track.

Albon responded to the criticism by describing the encounter as a fun and fair racing incident. He noted that the space became tight as he attempted to pass, suggesting that Alonso may have left insufficient room. Albon stated that while the contact was an incident that did not result in a penalty, he enjoyed the challenge of racing against the veteran Spaniard.
