Lewis Hamilton criticizes Formula 1 race distance reductions

Formula 1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso have expressed significant criticism regarding current and upcoming technical regulations. Speaking on the sidelines of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, Hamilton criticized the decision to reduce race distances from at least 305 kilometers to 290 kilometers starting in the upcoming season. He stated the change makes “absolutely no sense” and argued that races should be longer to maintain the physical and mental challenge required of elite athletes.

The reduction in distance is a response to a new engine formula that increases fuel consumption. Because racing teams rejected larger fuel tanks and chassis modifications, officials opted to shorten the race distance by two to three laps.

Separately, Fernando Alonso criticized the 2026 engine generation, claiming the current regulations force drivers to drive slowly to be fast. He argued that excessive engineering and simulations have diminished the instinctive nature of racing, making certain iconic tracks less enjoyable. Alonso suggested that reducing peak battery output in favor of more consistent power delivery could improve straight-line speed continuity.
