Fernando Alonso: FIA explores rule changes to secure driver's F1 future

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem is exploring technical adjustments to ensure Formula 1 retains top talent like Fernando Alonso. To prevent veteran drivers from retiring due to uncompetitive machinery, the FIA is considering the 'Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities' (ADUO) system. This measure aims to provide lagging engine manufacturers, such as Honda, with extra development space to close the gap to leading suppliers like Red Bull.

Alonso, who has expressed uncertainty regarding his future beyond 2027, has criticized current regulations for overemphasizing electrical energy management at the expense of driver skill. Ben Sulayem has reportedly held discussions with Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll and intends to speak personally with Alonso to encourage him to extend his career.

Reflecting on his 25-year career and record 439 Grand Prix starts, Alonso stated that his greatest legacy is not his two world championships or 32 wins, but his impact on Spanish motorsport. He noted that Spanish representation in F1 technical roles, such as engineers and mechanics, has grown significantly since his debut in 2001.
