Fernando Alonso links F1 future to technical regulations

Fernando Alonso has indicated that his decision to continue in Formula One beyond the current season will depend more on future technical regulations than on Aston Martin’s immediate car performance. The veteran driver expressed dissatisfaction with current rules, stating, “This is not the Formula 1 we grew up with,” and voiced a desire to contribute to the development of future regulations.

While Aston Martin has seen recent improvements in cornering performance following chassis and Honda power unit updates, the team continues to face challenges. Team principal Mike Krack emphasized that performance issues should not be attributed solely to the Honda engine, noting that chassis drivability and overall integration are critical factors. Technical Director Enrico Cardile confirmed that the team is shifting focus from major aerodynamic upgrades to weight reduction to extract further performance from the AMR26.

Alonso, whose contract expires at the end of 2026, noted that while he remains professional regardless of whether he is fighting for a podium or a lower position, the direction of the sport is paramount. He suggested that the potential return to different engine philosophies in future years could influence his long-term career plans.
