Williams Racing struggles with technical issues and underinvestment in 2026 season

Williams Racing is facing a difficult 2026 Formula 1 season, currently sitting ninth in the constructors' standings with 11 points. Team principal James Vowles attributed the struggle to two decades of underinvestment, noting that the team is currently using budget cap resources to fix long-standing issues rather than immediate performance gains.

Drivers Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon have described the season as a ‘perfect storm’ of technical setbacks. Key issues include a late car preparation, the FW48 being overweight, and an aerodynamic package that has failed to keep pace with competitors. Sainz, who recently signed a multi-year contract extension, clarified that rumors regarding a move to Audi were merely paddock speculation and reaffirmed his commitment to the Williams project.

On-track challenges have also surfaced, including a collision between Sainz and Albon at the Zandvoort Grand Prix. Vowles noted that while both drivers share responsibility, the team also bears part of the blame for placing them in a position where they were fighting for non-scoring positions. To combat the decline, the team is looking toward a major upgrade package expected in Azerbaijan to regain competitiveness.
