Fernando Alonso slams 2026 F1 hybrid cars as worst ever after Monaco practice

Two‑time World Champion Fernando Alonso criticised the 2026 generation of Formula 1 hybrid cars as “the worst I have ever driven” during Friday’s practice for the Monaco Grand Prix. He said the complex energy‑recovery and battery‑management systems cause unpredictable engine braking, with the car behaving differently when the battery is full versus when it is charging. Alonso added that “hybrid cars should not race”.

Alonso’s frustration was amplified by on‑track incidents: he briefly lost control, hit a wall, and highlighted chronic under‑steer in the Aston Martin AMR‑26. The driver urged the sport’s regulators to reconsider the hybrid formula that, in his view, undermines pure competition.
