Aston Martin faces engine issues at Dutch Grand Prix

Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll faced significant challenges during the Dutch Grand Prix weekend at Zandvoort, following the introduction of a new Honda power unit specification. While the team had seen performance gains in previous races due to chassis and aerodynamic upgrades, the new engine has introduced new technical difficulties.

Lance Stroll expressed frustration with the engine's drivability, describing the power delivery as a ‘lottery’ due to inconsistent engine braking and issues with downshifts. Fernando Alonso also reported difficulties with the engine's behavior under braking, noting it made the car hard to stop. Additionally, Alonso dealt with a malfunctioning straight-line mode (SLM) system, which necessitated a pit lane start for the sprint race.

Despite the poor qualifying results—with Alonso starting 18th and Stroll 19th—Alonso remained optimistic about the team's overall direction. He noted that the chassis performance has improved significantly, reducing the gap to the leaders by approximately three seconds over recent races. Technical leadership, including Adrian Newey, acknowledged the potential for further performance once the power unit issues are resolved by Honda.
