Fernando Alonso doubts enjoyment of Silverstone race amid Aston Martin's 2026 car woes

Fernando Alonso warned that the upcoming British Grand Prix at Silverstone will be a "sad" spectacle because the 2026 Formula 1 power‑unit regulations limit energy recovery on the circuit’s long straights and fast‑corner sequences. He said the cars will lose electric boost in the Maggotts‑Becketts‑Chapel combination, making the race less enjoyable for drivers and spectators.

Aston Martin, currently at the back of the grid with the under‑performing AMR26, is developing a large upgrade package aimed at the Hungarian sprint and beyond. Technical director Adrian Newey expressed optimism, noting that if the improvements work Alonso is likely to stay with the team for another season. Newey highlighted Alonso’s experience as invaluable for development and said the team is working around the clock at its Silverstone base.

Alonso’s future decision will be taken over the summer, with the team encouraging him to extend his contract for at least one more year, provided the car’s performance shows clear progress.
