Fernando Alonso criticizes Honda engine performance and weighs F1 future
Fernando Alonso has expressed significant frustration following the Spanish Grand Prix, describing the Honda power unit as “very bad.” The driver reported difficulties controlling the turbo and losing power during pit stops and blue flag periods, finishing 17th, two laps behind the winner. Alonso has also criticized the current technical philosophy of Formula 1, specifically the heavy reliance on electrical energy and its impact on driver talent.
As Alonso weighs his future with Aston Martin, the team is focused on retaining him for the 2027 season. While team leadership has expressed a desire to keep the two-time champion, Alonso has stated there is “no urgency” in his decision, noting he wants to understand how upcoming rule changes will affect racing. Aston Martin is currently prioritizing long-term development, including the arrival of Adrian Newey, rather than immediate car evolutions this year.
To support the team's competitiveness, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has engaged in discussions with Alonso. The conversation includes potential technical assistance through mechanisms like the ADUO system to help struggling manufacturers like Honda improve their performance.
