Fernando de Noronha leads Brazil in electric vehicle density
The Fernando de Noronha archipelago has the highest concentration of electric vehicles per inhabitant in Brazil. Since early 2022, the district has registered 78 fully electric vehicles, resulting in one electric car for every 43 residents. This is significantly higher than the national average of one electric vehicle per 639 inhabitants.
This trend is driven by the 'Noronha Carbono Zero' program, which aims to phase out combustion engine vehicles. However, the Pernambuco State Legislative Assembly has postponed the program's targets until August 2029, citing a lack of charging infrastructure.
A significant environmental contradiction exists: while the vehicle fleet is electric, the archipelago's electricity is primarily supplied by the Tubarão thermoelectric plant, which runs on fossil fuels. Solar energy currently accounts for only about 10% of the local electricity demand.
