Fernando Farías Laguna ordered into pretrial detention for fuel smuggling FAST-MOVING

Ex-Navy Commander Fernando Farías Laguna has been ordered into mandatory pretrial detention by a Mexican federal judge. He will remain held at the El Altiplano maximum-security prison in the State of Mexico while his legal situation is determined.

The Attorney General's Office (FGR) has formally charged Farías Laguna with organized crime and fuel smuggling, a practice locally known as 'huachicol fiscal.' The prosecution alleges he led a criminal network, including his brother Manuel Roberto Farías Laguna, that used tankers to illegally import hydrocarbons through maritime customs in ports such as Tampico and Ensenada.

Farías Laguna was recently returned to Mexico following his expulsion from Argentina, where he had been detained after seeking asylum. To expedite his return, Mexican authorities opted for deportation rather than a formal extradition process.

The judicial hearing, which lasted nearly 18 hours and was conducted privately via videoconference, was marked by defense requests for public access and a doubling of the constitutional term to gather evidence. The hearing is scheduled to resume on August 26 to determine if he will be formally linked to the criminal process.
