Fernando Farías Laguna linked to organized crime and fuel smuggling

A federal judge has linked former Rear Admiral Fernando Farías Laguna to a criminal process involving organized crime and the concealment of hydrocarbons. The ruling, issued by Judge Alejandra Ramírez de la Vega in Almoloya de Juárez, also ratified mandatory pretrial detention, meaning Farías Laguna will remain imprisoned at the El Altiplano high-security facility.

The prosecution, led by the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR), alleges Farías Laguna was part of a network involved in the smuggling and distribution of fuel through maritime customs during the administration of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Defense attorney Epigmenio Mendieta announced that the legal team will bypass the standard appeal process to file an indirect amparo directly with the Federal Judiciary. The defense argues that the mandatory pretrial detention is unconstitutional and seeks to challenge the legality of the proceedings.

Additionally, Mónica Gámez, the wife of Farías Laguna, has stated that the investigation into this fuel smuggling network could implicate high-ranking officials. She claimed that Farías Laguna had previously reported irregularities to the former Secretary of the Navy, Rafael Ojeda Durán, and mentioned names such as Adán Augusto López Hernández and Andrés Manuel López Beltrán.
