Lula launches re‑election bid, says abusers of women need not vote for him
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva officially launched his re‑election campaign at the PT national convention in São Paulo on 2 August 2026. He confirmed the ticket with Vice‑President Geraldo Alckmin and warned of a forthcoming clash with parliamentary amendments and party‑funding practices, promising a more combative “Lula porreta” stance.
During the event Lula highlighted gender‑based violence, declaring that men who beat women “do not need to vote for me”. He interrupted the programme to invite first lady Rosângela da Silva (Janja) to the stage, where she urged women to be decisive in the upcoming election. Other speakers, including Fernando Haddad, praised Brazil’s sovereignty, suggested Haddad as a possible future president, and noted that Brazil’s progress makes other nations “envious”. The convention gathered thousands of militants and marked the start of the 2026 presidential race.
