Fernando Haddad reports irregular police pursuit in São Paulo

Fernando Haddad, a candidate for the governorship of São Paulo, has reported an irregular encounter involving the Military Police. Haddad claims that after dropping him off at his residence, a police vehicle followed his driver for approximately 40 minutes and five kilometers, involving intimidating behavior such as flashing lights and driving close to the vehicle. The driver also reported that officers were armed with rifles and used dismissive language when approached at a hotel.

Governor Tarcísio de Freitas has ordered an inquiry to investigate the incident, which will include reviewing security camera footage and taking formal statements from the driver. The São Paulo Public Security Secretariat (SSP) and the Military Police have conducted preliminary investigations, analyzing approximately 40 to 70 camera recordings. The authorities stated that current findings have not yet identified evidence of irregular procedures or direct interaction between the police and Haddad’s team, noting that some footage shows a police vehicle passing through the area without stopping or engaging.

The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) is also involved, requesting justifications from the police and the SSP regarding the patrol authorizations and the identification of the specific officers and vehicle involved. The investigation aims to determine if there was any abuse of authority or political targeting.
