Fernando Solís Luna wins national Mexican pottery award

Master potter Fernando Solís Luna, from Zinapécuaro, Michoacán, has been awarded the top prize at the 13th National Contest of Great Masters of Mexico's Artisanal Heritage. His winning piece, titled ‘Cántaro armadillos’, is a clay vessel featuring armadillo bases and traditional patterns.

The work was created using modeling, burnishing, engraving, and smoking techniques, taking approximately 30 days to complete. Solís Luna, who began learning the craft from his family at age six, dedicated the award to his parents and his children, to whom he is passing on the tradition.

The competition was organized by the federal Secretariat of Culture through Fonart, the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL), and Banco Nacional de México. While 22 awards were distributed across various categories, Solís Luna received the highest national recognition. The winning pieces are on display at the Sala Justino Fernández in Bellas Artes until October 28.
