Fernando Tejero backs 31st 'El alcalde de Zalamea' performance at Mérida Classical Theatre Festival

Actor Fernando Tejero, starring in the Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Mérida’s production of Cómicos de Roma, was named patron of the 31st edition of the popular outdoor representation of El alcalde de Zalamea in Zalamea de la Serena. The event, declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional, transforms the town’s streets each August and involves more than 700 local participants. Festival director Jesús Cimarro highlighted the long‑standing collaboration with the town, while mayor José Antonio Murillo Dávila thanked the Mérida festival for its continued support.

The same festival also staged David Mamet’s comedy Cómicos de Roma, a modern adaptation of a Plautine work directed by José Pascual. The production, part of the 72nd edition, was praised for its wit and ensemble work, though some reviewers noted that the staging occasionally overpowered the text. The play reflects on the resilience of theatre and the precarious life of actors, fitting the festival’s broader celebration of classical and contemporary drama.
