Fernando Trueba premieres music documentary ‘Bajañí’

Director Fernando Trueba has premiered his new documentary, ‘Bajañí’, at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. The film serves as a musical tribute to the Spanish guitarist Niño Josele, following his artistic journey across various locations including Almería, Madrid, New York, Sao Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro.

Trueba described the project as putting cinema “absolutely at the service of music,” noting that the film lacks dialogue and relies entirely on musical performances. The documentary features collaborations with prominent figures in jazz and Brazilian music, including Caetano Veloso, Rubén Blades, Marisa Monte, Ron Carter, and Kenny Barron.

Notable sequences include a performance of the Beatles’ ‘Because’ with Caetano Veloso and a collaboration between Rubén Blades and Ron Carter. The film was produced by Womack Studios and was presented in the Official Section of the festival, though not in competition.
