Fernleigh Track crime decreases despite recent cyclist assault
Reported crime on the Fernleigh Track has decreased between May and July, according to data presented to the Fernleigh Track Safety Subcommittee. This decline follows the installation of safety signage, a recommendation from the subcommittee which includes representatives from the City of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie City Council, NSW Police, and Transport for NSW.
Despite the downward trend in reported incidents during the winter months, community safety concerns remain high following a recent assault on a 52-year-old cyclist. The attackers are estimated to have been between 13 and 17 years old.
Stacey Wilde, a founder of the community group Taking Back Our Paths, noted that there have been 60 reported incidents this year. These include 32 incidents resulting from proactive policing, 31 intelligence reports regarding traffic and rider behavior, the destruction of two e-bikes, and 17 warnings issued under the Young Offenders Act.
