Ferrara faces demographic crisis with high aging index

The province of Ferrara is facing a significant demographic imbalance, recording one of the highest aging indices in the Emilia-Romagna region. Official data shows 288 elderly residents for every 100 young people, significantly exceeding the regional average of 211 and the national average of 208.

Projections suggest the situation will worsen by 2030, with the aging index expected to reach 339. Over the last decade, the province has lost 3.8% of its residents, indicating difficulty in attracting and retaining a younger population.

Confesercenti Ferrara warns that this trend directly impacts the local economy and social fabric. The lack of generational turnover is leading to the closure of neighborhood shops due to a lack of successors and creating difficulties in finding staff for operational roles. Additionally, the aging population is increasing pressure on local healthcare and assistance services.
