Ferrara prison inmate dies after inhaling cooking gas

A 25-year-old Tunisian inmate died in the Ferrara prison during the early hours of August 30 after inhaling gas from cooking canisters. The incident occurred around 4:00 AM at the Arginone correctional facility.

Roberto Cavalieri, the regional guarantor for persons deprived of liberty, noted that such gas is sometimes inhaled to seek a ‘high,’ which can be fatal. While the deceased had a history of self-harming behavior in his cell, prison authorities reported that he was not considered an imminent suicide risk.

The inmate had been transferred to Ferrara from the Reggio Emilia prison following security-related transfers from Modena. He was reportedly due to complete his sentence within one year.
