Ferrari and McLaren reintroduce manual transmissions in new models

Major automotive manufacturers Ferrari and McLaren are reintroducing manual transmission experiences in new high-performance models, blending traditional driving engagement with modern technology.

Ferrari has unveiled the 12Cilindri Manuale, a limited special series of the 12Cilindri. The vehicle utilizes a ‘Manuale by-wire’ system developed in Maranello, which replaces mechanical linkages with a digital architecture of sensors and actuators. This system translates physical driver movements into digital commands for the existing eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). The setup includes a high-strength steel selector lever and a by-wire third pedal that uses a sensor to mimic the load-travel curve of a conventional mechanical clutch.

Mclaren has announced the McL 6GT, a supercar scheduled for release in 2028 that will feature a manual gearbox. Inspired by a 1970s project by Bruce McLaren, the model aims to prioritize driver involvement through a rear-wheel-drive layout and manual shifting. The vehicle is expected to feature a V8 engine and a carbon fiber chassis, representing a strategic shift for the British manufacturer toward offering a more direct, analog driving experience in an increasingly electronic market.
