Charles Leclerc uses older Ferrari engine for Madrid Grand Prix

Charles Leclerc is competing in the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid using an older-specification Ferrari power unit. This technical decision follows his heavy 60g crash at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, which raised concerns regarding potential damage to the newly introduced ADUO2 engine.

Ferrari opted for the older unit as a precaution to avoid technical anomalies during practice sessions on the new Madrid circuit. While this creates a power disadvantage compared to teammate Lewis Hamilton, early practice data suggests the impact may be mitigated by the circuit's characteristics. Leclerc has confirmed he is in good health following medical checks for neck pain and temporary vision issues experienced after the Monza impact.

Leclerc also addressed the recent on-track tension with Hamilton following their collision in Monza, stating that the two drivers have since spoken and reached an understanding. Meanwhile, the Madrid race marks a significant return for Formula 1 to the Spanish capital, with Mercedes drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell showing strong early pace during Friday sessions.
