Ferrari launches ADUO power‑unit upgrade at Austrian Grand Prix

Ferrari unveiled the first element of its ADUO power‑unit development programme during the free‑practice sessions of the Austrian Grand Prix, running the updated engine package from the opening FP1. The upgrade, designated spec 067/6, is paired with a new fuel formulation co‑developed with Shell to allow higher combustion temperatures and improved thermal efficiency. Alongside the power‑unit changes, Ferrari introduced several aerodynamic refinements aimed at better airflow around the front tyres.

Mercedes, by contrast, did not activate its own ADUO credit and relied on modest aerodynamic adjustments to the front‑suspension arm fairing and engine cover for cooling. The strategy proved effective as George Russell secured pole position with a 1:06.113 lap, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and teammate Lewis Hamilton completed the top three. Red Bull also brought an extensive aerodynamic package, but the qualifying order highlighted the divergent development approaches of the leading teams.

The Austrian circuit, known for rewarding outright power, provided an early test of Ferrari’s engine upgrade ahead of the race distance, while Mercedes demonstrated that performance gains can still be achieved without a new power‑unit package.
