Ferrari patents active aerodynamic system using rear lights

Ferrari has filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a revolutionary active aerodynamic system that utilizes the vehicle's rear lights to improve performance.

The patent, titled ‘Sport Road Vehicle With Variable Rear Aerodynamic Load’, describes a mechanism where the rear light units are mounted on a mobile kinematic system. Under normal driving conditions, the lights remain in a standard position to provide illumination. However, when the vehicle requires increased stability during cornering or braking, an actuator rotates and translates the light units upward and outward, extending them beyond the edge of the rear wing.

In this active position, the lights function as extensions of the rear wing, instantly increasing aerodynamic load on the rear axle. This movement also modifies the throat of the axial aerodynamic channel located behind the cockpit, optimizing airflow and reducing turbulence to maximize ground effect and stability.
