Ferrari struggles with qualifying pace and results in 2026 season
Ferrari continues to struggle with converting race pace into podium finishes during the 2026 Formula 1 season. Despite the SF-26 demonstrating competitive long-run rhythm, the team faces significant challenges with qualifying performance on soft tires, often forcing drivers to start from the fourth or fifth position.
During the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, Lewis Hamilton was forced to retire after only seven laps due to brake failure. Charles Leclerc showed strong pace, managing a 48-lap stint on hard tires, but a pit stop left him in fourth place. Leclerc noted that the team was hoping for a safety car or red flag to improve their position, but neither occurred.
With nine races remaining, Ferrari holds 358 points in the constructors' championship, trailing Mercedes by 145 points. Team principal Fred Vasseur has emphasized the urgent need to resolve qualifying issues to remain competitive for the runner-up spot and prepare for the 2027 season.
