Ferrari upgrades spark budget‑cap concerns in Formula 1

After the Austrian Grand Prix, Ferrari’s aggressive development program – including the first stage of its ADUO engine upgrade – has heightened scrutiny of Formula 1’s $215 million budget cap. Drivers Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso questioned how top teams can continuously introduce major parts, while Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said, “We’re a little surprised that Ferrari can throw such massive upgrades at the car the way they do.”

Red Bull, McLaren and Mercedes have also rolled out updates, but rivals argue Ferrari’s pace of parts introduction appears “limitless.” The debate underscores worries that the budget‑cap rules are difficult to enforce and may favour teams with larger resources, prompting calls for greater transparency from the FIA.
