Ferreira Diniz Urban Quilombo receives heritage protection in Rio
The Ferreira Diniz Urban Quilombo, located in the Glória neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, has been designated as a protected heritage site by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan).
The heritage listing covers the entire property on Rua Cândido Mendes, including the manor houses and the communal courtyard. This protection aims to safeguard the site against real estate speculation and preserve its cultural significance. As part of the safeguarding process, Iphan intends to conduct an inventory of the community's cultural manifestations.
The community, composed of 14 families from the Ferreira and Diniz lineages, has occupied the land since the 1950s. In 2023, the Fundação Cultural Palmares officially recognized them as quilombolas due to their community ties and historical roots. The site has also become a local gastronomic hub, centered around the traditional feijoada served by Maria Aparecida Ferreira, known as Tia Cida.
