Ferret care and longevity guidelines
Ferrets typically live between 5 and 9 years, though the oldest recorded ferret reached 14 years of age. Longevity is influenced by genetics, diet, veterinary care, and environmental factors. A high-quality, meat-based diet low in carbohydrates and fiber is recommended, alongside regular veterinary checkups to manage diseases such as insulinoma, adrenal disease, and lymphoma.
To ensure physical and mental well-being, ferrets require significant time outside of their cages. Experts suggest a minimum of 4 hours of daily playtime to prevent boredom, depression, and physical health issues. While cages should be multi-tiered and appropriately sized, they should not be the animal's sole environment.
