Ferret care and social behavior considerations

Ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) are inherently social animals that typically benefit from the companionship of other ferrets. While it is possible to keep a single ferret, it is generally not recommended because solitary animals may miss out on vital social interactions, such as grooming and wrestling, which provide mental and physical stimulation. Owners of single ferrets must provide significantly more proactive enrichment to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors.

Regarding interaction with humans, ferrets can be trained to sit on a person's shoulder, though this requires patience and understanding of their temperament. Because ferrets are naturally inquisitive, active, and driven by exploration, they are not passive companions. Training must account for their tendency to dig, burrow, or nibble as they investigate their surroundings.
