Ferret dietary health: Risks of sugar and plant-based foods
Ferrets are obligate carnivores with short digestive tracts designed to process animal proteins and fats rather than carbohydrates, sugars, or fiber. Because they lack necessary enzymes like lactase, many common human foods pose significant health risks to them.
Consuming sugar, honey, or ice cream can lead to dangerous blood sugar spikes and increase the risk of insulinoma, a common and potentially fatal pancreatic tumor. Additionally, high-carbohydrate treats, such as certain brand-name pet treats, can contribute to dental disease and metabolic issues.
Plant-based foods also present challenges. Kale, while nutritious for humans, contains high fiber that ferrets cannot properly digest and oxalates that may contribute to urinary stone formation. Owners are advised to prioritize diets high in protein and moderate in fat while avoiding artificial sweeteners, additives, and high-fiber vegetables.
