Ferret etymology and black-footed ferret conservation

The term ‘ferret’ is believed to originate from the Latin word ‘furittus’, meaning ‘little thief’. This name reflects the animal's historical role in rabbit hunting, where they were used to navigate burrows and flush out prey.

In North America, the black-footed ferret serves as a significant symbol of conservation success. After the species was brought to the brink of extinction, a captive breeding program initiated in 1987 helped stabilize the population. Currently, there are an estimated 300 to 400 mature black-footed ferrets living in the wild, with a total population of approximately 1,000 including those in captivity.
