Ferritin face: Social media trend links skin changes to iron levels
The viral social media term ‘ferritin face’ has gained significant traction on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where users link physical appearance to iron levels. The trend describes symptoms such as pale complexion, dark circles under the eyes, dull skin, dry skin, cracked lips, hair loss, and brittle nails.
Medical experts clarify that ‘ferritin face’ is not a formal medical diagnosis. Ferritin is a protein that acts as the body’s iron storage. While low ferritin levels can lead to these physical changes as the body prioritizes essential organs, these symptoms can also be caused by hormonal shifts, thyroid issues, or natural aging.
Doctors emphasize the distinction between iron deficiency and anemia. A deficiency occurs when iron stores are depleted, which can progress to iron-deficiency anemia—a drop in hemoglobin levels. Common causes for depleted stores include blood loss, increased physiological needs (such as during pregnancy), or dietary restrictions. Medical professionals warn against self-diagnosis based on appearance and recommend blood tests to accurately assess iron levels.
