Ferritin face trend highlights signs of iron deficiency

A viral social media trend known as ‘ferritin face’ has brought attention to the physical signs of iron deficiency. Users on platforms like TikTok are identifying aesthetic changes such as pale complexion, dull skin, dark circles, and under-eye bags as potential indicators of low iron levels.

Medical experts note that ferritin is the protein responsible for storing iron in the body, and its levels in the blood serve as the most reliable indicator of iron reserves. A deficiency can lead to visible symptoms, including brittle nails and hair thinning or loss, specifically a condition called telogen effluvium.

While social media trends encourage self-diagnosis through visual observation, health professionals emphasize that a definitive diagnosis requires blood tests. Causes for deficiency can range from dietary habits to physiological factors like pregnancy or intestinal absorption issues. Experts suggest consulting a physician to evaluate iron levels through specific medical analysis.
