Ferrol officially designated as City of Memory in Spain
The Spanish government has officially recognized Ferrol as a City of Memory following the publication of a resolution in the Official State Gazette (BOE). The designation honors the city’s historical defense of republican legality, its resistance against the Franco dictatorship, and its social and labor movements.
The recognition encompasses 22 specific sites linked to this history. These include the San Felipe Castle, which served as a military prison and site of executions, the former naval prisons of Caranza and A Graña, and the Canido Institute, which stands on the site of a former civil cemetery where executions occurred. Other included locations are the Navantia factory, the Teatro Jofre, and various military and police enclaves.
The initiative was driven by five memorialist collectives and supported by historians. The resolution mandates the conservation and promotion of these sites through the installation of explanatory signage, the creation of digital resources, and the integration of these locations into international circuits.
